In the late 1870’s and 1880’s many families fled the city of Montgomery, Alabama in fear of Yellow Fever outbreaks. Some stayed in hotels, but many promenient families built summer homes in Verbena. Not only did the new residents build hotels, stores and schools, but also churches. The Methodist Church was the first church constructed in Verbena in 1877. The original white frame structure is still used as the Sanctuary for Verbena United Methodist Church.
The members of the church have taken constant care of the church building attempting to keep it both safe and historically accurate. Verbena United Methodist Church celebrates its rich past, but is ever looking toward the future. The mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Our vision is to reach out to children, youth and adults, and encourage every generation to deepen their discipleship. VUMC is a vibrant church with many opportunities for ministry, and we invite you to explore this site to learn more about the church.
